#Roommates, in his recent Congressional address, President Joe Biden spoke on a host of issues impacting Americans, such as minimum wage, troops in Afghanistan and much more. One of the highlights was his firm stance on honoring George Floyd and enacting nationwide police reform. During his address, President Biden urged members of Congress to formally pass the George Floyd Justice In Policing Act to coincide with the first anniversary of his death.
@CNN reports, although the George Floyd Justice In Policing Act has already passed through the House, President Biden spent a portion of his address urging the legislation to be passed by the Senate, making it official. “My fellow Americans, we have to come together to rebuild trust between law enforcement and the people they serve, to root out systemic racism in our criminal justice system and to enact police reform in George Floyd’s name that passed the House already…we need to work together to find a consensus, but let’s get it done next month by the first anniversary of George Floyd’s death,” Biden said.
The written legislation regarding the George Floyd Act covers a spectrum of police reform issues including “banning chokeholds and no-knock warrants”, and would mandate “deadly force be used only as a last resort.” However, getting the George Floyd Act fully passed through Congress could prove to be an uphill battle. Although Democrats control the Senate, with Vice President Kamala Harris acting as the tie breaker, most legislation still requires 60 votes to overcome a filibuster, meaning if there is not enough support from Republicans, the bill won’t pass.
As we previously reported, Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all three counts for which he was charged for the May 25, 2020 murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Following the verdict, Chauvin was immediately transferred to a Minnesota Correctional Facility.
He will remain there until his sentencing within the next seven weeks.
