Four Ways To Use Your Business Expertise To Create A Home Gym

Health and fitness are important considerations for busy entrepreneurs. After all, they’re not wrong when they say, “If you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything.” But it can be a challenge to fit a workout into an already-full schedule. Back in 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, that was further complicated when many people were stuck at home unable to make it to their favorite gym for a much-needed workout.

One solution was to figure out how to take the commercial gym concept and add it to the home with one’s current space in mind. Many people did this, and you can do it, too. But how?

Now’s the perfect time to take the knowledge you already have in one area of your life and apply it to another. The following offers insight into four ways in which setting up a home gym is like setting up a business plan and how you can take your business savviness and use it to create an awe-inspiring home gym.

1. Conduct Market Research

Just like with a business plan, you should do your market research to figure out how to take your home gym ideas and put them into motion. As you conduct research on your home gym endeavors, consider the following factors:

Space: Look at your room’s layout and figure out how much space you have to work with overall. Ask others who’ve created their own home gyms how much space they had to work with and what they did with that space. Also, check out pictures on social media, such as Instagram, to see what the ideal home gym looks like and how the equipment was placed in rooms of certain sizes.

Fitness Goals: Are you looking to lose weight with cardio or get stronger with weights? 

2. Write Your Business Plan

As with business plans, when you construct your home gym and take the steps leading up to doing so, you should write out a plan. Here are some must-add parts for your plan:

• Think about each exercise you completed at the commercial gym. When you remember what you used to do at the gym, use that information to write down your fitness goals. For example, you might want to build muscle, burn fat or improve your cardio.

• Next, match those goals with the various programs available online. When you match your fitness goals to your workout program, you can ensure you’re getting everything out of your home gym that you want to.

• If you’re not sure which programs fit your goals, you can find online fitness surveys that will take your goals and match them up with ideal programs. These surveys will also ask you about your exercise regimen. 

3. Fund Your Business

Like an actual business, you’ll need to fund your home gym plan. So, before you put your home gym into use, you need to gather the tools to make this happen. As a new gym boss, you have limited funding and resources, such as space. This is why you need to think about what equipment you need and stock your home gym in a cost-efficient manner. 

You can still get the exercise you need and work on the desired fitness areas while keeping a budget in mind. For example, barbells and dumbbells are less expensive than full exercise machines. Free weights have always been popular. Back in 2019, the National Sporting Goods Association stated approximately 3.9 million units of free weights had been sold in 2018. And that was before the Covid-19 pandemic hit!

Free weights can be used to work all parts of the body, providing you with a well-rounded home gym workout. 

Therefore, if you want to save money on your home gym expenses, consider stocking it with free weights and fund your gym more easily. 

4. Open Your Home Gym and Stay On Track

Once your business has been funded and equipment purchased, it’s time to open your home gym for business! Turn up the music and start your muscle-building and cardio workouts with ease. It may be that the only difference you’ll notice between the commercial gym and your home gym is that you’re alone!

But don’t worry about being too alone and fearful of staying on track. There’s plenty of access to online help in various forms. And there are many ways to keep yourself motivated. Here are some ways to ensure your exercise regimen and motivation don’t fail you:

Eye-Catching Home Gym Designs: If your home gym is aesthetically pleasing, this will be a motivational factor for you. The home gym should be a place you enjoy spending time in, so make sure you’ve designed it in the best possible way. This doesn’t just apply to what you hang on the walls, you can extend your design to your equipment as well. Get creative with patterned weight plates, such as those from the Fringe Savage Series or American Barbell Color Series, or opt for a bench pad in a bright color from the Rep Fitness 5200 or GetRxD FIDAB-2 line.

Occasional Home Gym Upgrades: You might not be able to update your home gym on a continuous basis, but do so occasionally when your budget allows for it. For example, if you currently have a 300-pound weight limit bench or barbell, you may find as time goes by, you’re ready to up your game and want to upgrade to a 1,000-pound weight limit bench or barbell. Fitness Communities: Just as it’s valuable to connect with fellow entrepreneurs and business owners throughout your business journey, consider joining a local or online fitness community for additional support. For example, there may be events or forums where you can post online about your activity and connect with others who are doing the same.

As a result of everything mentioned above, I have now moved from being a commercial gym-goer to full-time home gym owner. And with the growth of home gyms lately and home fitness equipment sales surging 85% from 2019 to 2020 and still growing, you can see many others have joined me, as well!

Remember, if you want to set up your home gym and make it work for you, treat this venture like you would a business plan and follow the steps above. Then you can sit back, relax and watch your home workout dreams become reality — and experience the positive impacts of improved health as they cascade to your life and business.
